Taking part in MMNY? What you need to know

PERMITSboy-problems

We have secured all necessary permits for parks and sidewalks for MMNY, and we have emailed copies to each location and musician. (Exception: permits for Park Slope, South Brooklyn, and Harlem are going out this afternoon.) In addition, roaming MMNY volunteers will have backup copies of your permits on Sunday.

If you are performing amplified music on Sunday, and do not yet have a sound permit, please email chris@makemusicny.org right away!

IN CASE OF RAIN

Make Music New York will take place, rain or shine. Current forecasts call for scattered showers on Sunday.

Although MMNY is an outdoor event, in the case of rain, concerts planned for sidewalks may take place inside a building lobby or store front. In this case, we simply ask that a door or window be opened so that the music is audible from the street.

Every location that signed up on our website indicated what they would do in inclement weather. Musicians and locations should be in touch with each other to confirm what their rain plan will be.

PROGRAMS

Please make sure you have programs on hand to distribute on Sunday!

Metro NY programs are still available for pickup at the following locations:

Long Island City: LIC Bar, 45-58 Vernon Blvd. Open 7 days, 5pm - 2am

Williamsburg: Public Assembly, 70 N. 6th St. Open 7 days, 7pm - 2am

Park Slope: Boing Boing, 204 6th Ave. Open 7 days, 11am - 7pm

Midtown Manhattan (Major Distribution Point): Sam Ash, 162 W. 48th Street. Mon - Sat, 10am - 8pm, Sun 12pm - 6pm

PHOTOS

MMNY encourages everyone to bring along a camera or video recorder to capture the diversity of music-making on the summer solstice!

After the day’s festivities, be sure to post your work on Flickr and YouTube with the tag “mmny”.

Two more MMNY performance opportunities

Friday, May 29th, 2009

All of MMNY’s permits have been filed, and it’s too late to add more performances to the schedule this year.Bedford Spike Hill crowd

However, there are two exceptions: if you’re still looking for a place to perform, two prime stretches of Brooklyn streets already have their permits for June 21st, and still need musicians!

(1) Four blocks of Vanderbilt Ave in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, will be closed to traffic and open for pedestrians on June 21st, from 12-5pm. All types of music are welcome for their main stage, and for sidewalks in front of stores and restaurants along the four blocks, who can provide electricity. (Music should not be extremely loud, however.) To sign up, call Steve Commender at (718) 398-7380. Sponsored by the Vanderbilt Avenue Merchants District, Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, and the NYC Department of Transportation.

(2) The entire retail strip of Graham Avenue in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is permitted and available for musicians throughout the day. To make arrangements, contact Betty Cooney, at biz11u72t@verizon.net. Sponsored by the Graham Avenue Business Improvement District.

Now through June 21st - What to Expect

Friday, May 29th, 2009

If you’re taking part in MMNY, here’s a rough idea of what to expect, on our end, over the next few weeks:

Today: Listings go online

Thursday, June 3rd: Neighborhood-specific maps & fliers available to download and print out

Friday, June 4th: Metro NY’s MMNY program & poster available, distribution begins

Week of June 8th: Copies of MMNY sound permits, park permits mailed to locations & musicians

On your end, we expect venues and musicians to be in touch with each other, finalize logistical issues, discuss the options in case of rain, and promote the performances in all the ways you normally would.

Survey for NYC Musicians

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Our friends at NYC Performing Arts Spaces are conducting a short, 4-question survey of NYC musicians, to find out how the current economic climate is affecting your work.

If you have a moment, please click on this link to answer a few questions. Although your own answers will be anonymous, survey results will be publically released, and will help government and private agencies meet musicians’ needs.
